Gate valves: buying guide and questions
How to choose a gate valve
- Use
- Gate valves are for fully open or fully closed service with low pressure drop. For throttling use a globe or butterfly valve instead.
- Body material
- Cast iron or ductile iron for water and fire lines; carbon steel (WCB, A105) for steam, oil and higher pressure; stainless steel for corrosive or hygienic service.
- Stem
- Rising stem (OS&Y) shows at a glance whether the valve is open: required on many fire-protection systems. Non-rising stem saves height in pits and buried lines.
- Seat
- Resilient (rubber-encapsulated) wedge for drinking water and tight shut-off; metal wedge for steam and high temperature.
- Standards
- API 600/602, BS 5163, EN 1171, ASME B16.10 face-to-face and B16.5 flanges; UL/FM listed valves for fire systems on request.
What is the price of a gate valve in Bangladesh?
Price depends on size, pressure rating, body material (cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel) and brand. Send the size, rating, connection and quantity and we quote within 24 hours.
Gate valve or butterfly valve?
Gate valves give a straight, full-bore flow path and tight shut-off; butterfly valves are lighter, cheaper and quicker to operate in large sizes and can throttle. For fire lines and steam, gate valves are common; for large water lines, butterfly valves.
What is a knife gate valve used for?
For thick media such as slurry, pulp, sludge and ash, where the sharp gate cuts through solids that would jam a normal valve.
