Valves: buying guide and questions

How to choose a valve
Valve type
Ball or butterfly valves for quick on/off; gate valves for full-bore isolation; globe valves for throttling; check valves to stop back-flow; safety valves for over-pressure protection.
Body material
Cast iron or ductile iron for water and fire lines; carbon steel (WCB, A105) for steam, oil and higher pressure; stainless steel (SS304/SS316) for chemicals and food; brass for small plumbing sizes.
Pressure class
PN10/PN16/PN25/PN40 or ANSI Class 150/300/600, matched to the line pressure and temperature.
End connection
Threaded (BSP/NPT) for small sizes, flanged (ASME B16.5 / EN 1092) for larger lines, wafer or lug for butterfly valves, socket or butt weld for high pressure.
Operation
Lever, handwheel or gearbox, or automated with an electric or pneumatic actuator.
