pH & ORP sensors: buying guide and questions
How to choose a pH sensor
- Process
- General-purpose sensors for water and effluent; poisoning-resistant references for sulfides, cyanides and H₂S; HF-resistant glass for fluoride; flat glass for coating and abrasive slurries.
- Temperature and pressure
- Standard sensors work to about 80–100 °C; high-temperature designs reach 120–155 °C. Check the pressure rating at the process temperature.
- Mounting
- Insertion or flow-through in a pipe tee, submersion on a pole in a tank, or retractable through a ball valve so the sensor can be removed without stopping the process.
- Signal
- Analog sensors with a preamplifier, or digital sensors (SMART, Memosens) that store calibration data and can be calibrated in the workshop.
- Transmitter
- Match the sensor to the analyser: single or multi-channel, 4–20 mA/HART, fieldbus, relays, and hazardous-area approval if needed.
How often should an industrial pH sensor be calibrated?
Typically every one to four weeks, depending on the process; dirty or hot processes need more frequent checks. Digital sensors can be calibrated in the workshop and swapped in the field.
Why do pH sensors fail early in paper mills and effluent plants?
Coating of the glass, poisoning of the reference by sulfides or heavy metals, and abrasion. Sensors with poisoning-resistant or rebuildable references and flat glass last longer in these processes.
What is the price of a pH sensor in Bangladesh?
It depends on the sensor type, materials, temperature rating and connection. Send the process, temperature, pressure and mounting and we quote within 24 hours.
