Conductivity sensors: buying guide and questions
How to choose a conductivity sensor
- Contacting or toroidal
- Contacting (electrode) sensors for clean water, from ultrapure to about 20,000 µS/cm; toroidal (inductive) sensors for dirty, corrosive and highly conductive liquids up to about 2,000,000 µS/cm.
- Cell constant
- 0.01 /cm for pure water and steam condensate, 0.1 /cm for RO permeate and boiler water, 1.0 /cm for general water, 10 /cm or toroidal for strong solutions.
- Mounting
- Screw-in, retractable through a ball valve, sanitary flange for hygienic systems, flow cell for sample lines, or flow-through toroidal sensors that fit between pipe flanges.
- Concentration
- Many analysers convert conductivity to % concentration for acids, caustic and brine.
Which conductivity sensor is used for boiler and RO water?
A contacting sensor with a 0.01 or 0.1 /cm cell constant; for condensate and ultrapure water use 0.01 /cm.
Which sensor measures caustic or acid concentration?
A toroidal (inductive) sensor with an analyser that has concentration curves; it has no electrodes to corrode.
