How to choose a temperature sensor
- RTD or thermocouple
- Pt100/Pt1000 RTDs are more accurate and stable up to about 600 °C; thermocouples (K, J, N, R, S) cover higher temperatures and fast response.
- Thermowell
- Use a thermowell in pressurised or flowing lines so the sensor can be replaced without opening the process.
- Transmitter
- A head- or field-mount transmitter converts the sensor to 4–20 mA/HART for long cable runs and noise immunity.
- Accuracy
- Class A or 1/10 DIN RTDs for tight control; check the accuracy of the complete loop.
Pt100 or thermocouple: which should I use?
Pt100 for accuracy up to about 600 °C; thermocouples for higher temperatures, small sizes and fast response.
